And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:7

A storm of controversy initiated Paul's imprisonment.  Some people accused Paul of bringing Gentiles into the Jerusalem temple area.  These accusers invited the attention of the civil authorities to Paul's transgression.  They did this by causing a near riot in the streets of Jerusalem.

Under circumstances like these how can Paul think about peace?  How can he authentically transmit the peace of God to his readers?  It appears that he has had very little peace in his years as a missionary.

The peace of which Paul is speaking exists in the middle of life's stress.  This peace comes in knowing that all is well between God and us.

Helen Keller once remarked, "I do not want the peace that passeth understanding.  I want the understanding that bringeth peace."

At first glance it appears that she is contradicting Paul's words.  Further consideration, however, shows us that she understands Paul's words perfectly.

In understanding God's grace towards us, we gain peace.  God shows us His grace by giving us Jesus.  Jesus embodies God's love for us, having made peace by His cross.  With God being for us, who can surely be against us?  In this confidence we surely live in His peace.
